Baked Fish and Chips - Inspired by NYTimes Cooking

Ingredients

  • 4-6 fillets white fish (cod or halibut),

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Cooking spray or oil mist
  • Lemon wedges
  • Tartar sauce or malt vinegar
  • 1 bag (16–20 oz) frozen French fries or potato wedges
  • Olive oil spray (optional, for extra crispiness)
  • Salt, to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Arrange frozen fries on a baking sheet in a single layer.
  3. Bake according to package instructions (usually 20–25 minutes), flipping halfway through for even crispiness.
  4. Place flour in one shallow bowl.
  5. Beat eggs in a second bowl.
  6. Mix panko, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a third bowl.

  7. Pat fish fillets dry with paper towels.
  8. Dredge each piece in flour, dip in egg, and coat thoroughly in the breadcrumb mixture.
  9. Place breaded fish on a parchment-lined baking sheet and spray lightly with cooking spray.
  10. Bake fish at 425°F for 12–15 minutes, flipping once, until golden and cooked through.
  11. For extra crunch, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end.
  12. Serve crispy baked fish with the hot fries.
  13. Garnish with lemon wedges and serve with tartar sauce or malt vinegar for dipping.
