Alaska’s 2025 King Salmon Quota: What It Means for You

Alaska’s 2025 King Salmon Quota: What It Means for You

Posted by Joci Besecker on

If you love Alaska’s wild Chinook (King) salmon, here’s what you need to know about this year’s fishing season - and why your favorite fillets may be a little harder to find.

What is a Fishing Quota?

fishing quota is a limit on how much of a specific fish species can be caught during a set time period, usually a season or a year. These limits help prevent overfishing, protect marine ecosystems, and ensure future generations can enjoy healthy, abundant seafood.

In Alaska, quotas are based on:

  • Scientific surveys and stock assessments

  • Health of fish populations

  • Spawning and reproductive cycles

  • Environmental conditions and ocean health

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) works closely with federal agencies like the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Pacific Salmon Commission to review data and set annual catch limits.

2025 King Salmon Quota: A Significant Cut

This year, the 2025 Alaska Chinook (King) salmon quota is one of the lowest we’ve seen in recent years.

  • Southeast Alaska's commercial troll fleet has been allocated just 92,700 King salmon - down over 60,000 fish from last year.

  • Overall, the harvest is forecast to drop about 40% compared to 2024 and nearly 50% compared to the five-year average.

What This Means for King Salmon Lovers

  • Lower availability — King salmon will be in shorter supply this year.

  • Higher prices — Scarcity drives cost increases across the board.

  • Earlier sell-outs — We expect inventory to move quickly during our peak summer and holiday months.

If you’re planning to enjoy wild Alaska king salmon in 2025, we recommend ordering early and stocking up.

Premier Catch’s Response: Maximizing Access

At Premier Catch, our priority is making sure as many of our customers as possible can enjoy this incredible fish while supporting sustainable fishing practices.

For the 2025 season:

  • We are moving from 8 oz portions to 6 oz portions - the perfect serving size for one person.

  • We will now sell individual portions instead of pre-packed 6-packs, giving you the flexibility to order exactly what you need.

  • This change allows us to stretch our limited king salmon supply so more customers can bring it to their tables.

Sustainability and Your Support

Choosing wild-caught Alaska seafood supports small-boat fishermen, coastal communities, and science-based fisheries management. It’s a commitment to protecting the oceans and ensuring future generations can enjoy wild salmon runs.

We appreciate your understanding as we navigate this historic low quota year. By staying informed and flexible with your orders, you’re helping us support both the environment and the livelihoods of the people who catch your fish.
